Perth, Australia June 23rd 2005The week leading up to September 11th every year is Global Security Week. The aim of this release is to provide information and impetus to help coordinate security awareness activities around the globe and, with Australian support, to align a range of commercial, public, national and transnational security awareness activities with the common aim of raising public awareness about security.

Over the next five years, Global Security Weeks start on: September 5th 2005; September 4th 2006; September 3rd 2007; September 8th 2008; and September 7th 2009.

What actually happens during Global Security Week?  Well that’s really up to both public and private security industry bodies and members. The way this is accepted in Australia, state by state and year by year may differ. Some may focus on physical and national security, others may highlight information security or personal security. The point of this week is not to constrain the wonderful creativity out there but simply to help align a whole host of national and global activities relating to security awareness and concentrate the industry’s collective efforts into this one week a year.

We ask those interested in participating in Global Security Week to register at globalsecurityweek.com. We are not for profit. Instead we welcome involvement by organising security awareness activities during the week, and encourage links to the global campaign using free promotional images.  We are gladly promoting activities on our website free of charge.

Against a backdrop of global terrorism and organised crime, security in general (and information security in particular) has become a vitally-important sociological and business issue.  Commercial and governmental organisations are investing heavily in technical security controls but the security problems caused by people remain largely unaddressed.

Whilst responsible businesses and individuals employ a wide range of security measures, the global Internet community suffers as a result of those irresponsible businesses and home users who remain largely unaware of security.  Hackers and spammers frequently take control of insecure Internet-connected systems, for example, to use as platforms for their attacks. Raising the general level of security awareness is the only feasible means of addressing this issue.

Information security awareness is just as important for the general public as it is for information security and other IT professionals. We need to educate our friends, family members and even work colleagues to pay more attention to information security.

Together we can make a difference. Support Global Security Week.
